Yachting

Developing crews that perform well. Without the drama.

Life and work onboard

Working on a yacht is incredibly demanding. Long hours under considerable pressure, living in confined quarters and almost no chance to get away from each other.

For Captains and HODs, the pressure comes from every direction. Keep the yacht operating smoothly and safely. Meet the exceptional demands of owners and guests. Push through back-to-back charters when everyone is exhausted. Deal with schedules changing at a moment’s notice. And at the same time, lead a crew of different cultures, personalities and levels of experience who are under the same pressure.

When people are tired and under pressure, patience wears thin. The way someone speaks gets taken the wrong way. Someone snaps. Someone else withdraws. Frustrations build, people start talking about each other rather than to each other and suddenly a problem between two people is affecting a whole department or the whole crew.

And it lands on the Captain or HOD to deal with it.

People problems become an ongoing headache on top of an already demanding job.

People problems affect the whole yacht

Lloyd’s Register’s 2026 Yacht Safety Culture & Wellbeing research found that operational and guest pressures, workload and fatigue affect how consistently safety procedures are followed. When fatigue, stress and poor support become normalised, reporting declines and operational risk increases.

Those same pressures affect leadership. When Captains and HODs are exhausted, stressed and pulled in different directions, it becomes harder to stay calm, communicate well, make considered decisions and deal with the people drama. Meanwhile, tension, conflict and poor behaviour create even more headaches.

And this isn’t just on rare dysfunctional yachts.
Industry research shows how widespread the people problems have become.

Research statistics

50%+

Crew are leaving because of low morale and personality clashes.

40%

Crew are leaving because of unfair treatment and bullying.

50%+

Crew say their mental health has deteriorated since working in yachting, with almost half considering leaving the industry because of it.

50% +

Crew say better leadership would be the most beneficial change for improving mental health onboard.

The People Dynamics of the industry

These figures point to negative People Dynamics across too many yachts. Crew are clashing, being bullied, becoming unhappy and struggling with their mental health. They’re leaving yachts and possibly the industry completely. Captains and HODs are left dealing with the fallout, while pressure, fatigue and poor support increase operational risk.

This isn’t rare. And it shouldn’t be accepted as “just yachting”.

Imagine life onboard with no drama

Positive People Dynamics make life onboard easier and more enjoyable for everyone, including the leaders.

There’s less tension and conflict and fewer people problems landing on the Captain’s or HOD’s plate. When problems do arise, crew talk to each other and sort them out rather than letting frustrations build, taking sides or dragging everyone else into it.

People know and respect each other’s differences, so misunderstandings happen less often and communication is easier. They support each other, feel comfortable speaking up and pull together when the pressure is on.

The result is a happier crew that works well together, performs well, stays longer and contributes to a safer yacht. And Captains and HODs can get on with leading and running the yacht instead of constantly being dragged into people drama.

People skills for Positive People Dynamics

Positive People Dynamics don’t happen by accident. They’re created by how people lead, communicate and work together.

That means developing the people skills that help a crew work together smoothly. Understanding yourself, how you interact with others and how your behaviour affects them. Also recognising the same in others.

It’s also about learning how to communicate clearly, manage problems effectively and adapt how you lead and communicate to get the best from a diverse group of people.

The good news is these are skills that can be learned. And I can teach them to you.

People Dynamics Programs

People Dynamics for Crew

One day

A program for the whole crew, using REACHLX behavioural profiling to help people understand themselves, each other and how their different communication and behavioural preferences affect the way they work together.

The program develops communication and interpersonal skills, including emotional intelligence, listening, managing differences, difficult conversations and conflict, so the crew can communicate and work together more effectively.

People Dynamics for Leaders

Two days

A leadership development program for Captains and HODs, using REACHLX behavioural profiling to build self-awareness and understanding of individual differences.

The program develops the people skills needed to lead a diverse crew, including adapting communication and leadership, giving feedback, managing difficult behaviour and conflict, coaching and developing crew and leading effectively under pressure.

Customized Programs

Every crew is different. I can create a program around what’s happening onboard, the challenges you’re facing and the skills your people need to develop.

Talk to me about what’s happening with your crew and we’ll work out what would be most useful.

Training that creates lasting transformation

Training is only the beginning. Once people are back in the job, especially when they’re tired or under pressure, it’s easy to fall back into familiar ways of communicating and behaving.

My programs include follow-up coaching to help participants apply what they’ve learned, work through real situations as they arise and develop new behaviours that last.

REACHLX profiles are available for 12 months and can be used across the whole crew as an ongoing management tool. They give Captains and HODs valuable insight into their people, helping them manage individuals and the crew more effectively.

REACHLX can also be used in recruitment, providing additional insight into a candidate’s attributes and how they may fit with the existing crew.

The aim is lasting transformation in how people behave.
